The book presents Bulgaria in different periods of its history. In the course of almost 7 millennia, all great ancient civilizations that modeled modern European civilization had their fascinating manifestation on BulgariaÂ’s present-day territory. These are the civilizations of the first prehistoric societies, of the Thracians, of the ancient Greeks, of Rome and Byzantium, of the Bulgarians and even of the Islam. The stories included in the book are about the rich cultural heritage of seven great civilizations in the Bulgarian lands.

The Golden Prehistoric Civilization
The largest gold hoard from this age was found near the city of Varna on the Black Sea, in a necropolis dating to the 5th millennium BC.

The Civilization of Thracians and Macedonians
The Thracians inhabited the present Bulgarian lands from the late 13th century BC to the 7th century AD., i.e. they were there for 2 millenniums – at least Homer first mentioned the Thracians under that name in his two poems – the Iliad and the Odyssey.

The Civilization of Hellas
Though born in Greece, the Hellenic civilization comprised in Antiquity the Bulgarian lands for more than seven centuries. In the 7th – 6th century BC Greek colonists founded a number of prospering cities on the Bulgarian Black sea coast.

The Roman Civilization
The Roman Empire incorporated the Bulgarian lands in 46 AD, after a nearly two-century severe resistance of the Thracian and Macedonian states.

The Byzantine Civilization
The clashes between Bulgaria and Byzantium could not in any case have exhausted either of the two civilizations, as these wars were not as bloody just because of the shared religion.

The Bulgarian Civilization
The Bulgarians appeared on the crossroads of the Balkans at the beginning of the 4th century as one of the nations, harassing the eastern confines of the Roman Empire.

The Civilization of Islam
The civilization of Islam spread over the Bulgarian lands after the Ottoman Empire conquered them between 1371 and 1422.
