Dobri Hristov is one of the grand masters of the Bulgarian composers' school. He majored in composition at the Prague Academy of Music in the class of Antonin Dvorzhak. Afterwards, Hristov came back to Bulgaria where he worked mainly in the field of solo and choral song, children's operetta and school song arranging lots of folk songs too. Since 1935, to the end of his life in 1941 he had been conductor of the biggest Bulgarian church choir, that of " St. Alexander Nevsky" Memorial Church.
The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is one of the greatest achievements of the composer. It's created in the spirit of the East-Orthodox church music, with prevalence of Old Bulgarian chants. It was performed for the first time in 1924.
Almost seventy years later, it was again performed in its complete version, conducted by Georgi Robev. The record was done then, in the "St. Alexander Nevsky" Memorial Church, the acoustics and atmosphere of which add further to the authentic sounding of the work.
