GD 242 Magnificat, Simon BRIXI, Bach - SOFIA BOYS CHOIR
Issued: 2004
Style: Choir Music
Company: Gega New, GD242
The first boys' choir in Sofia was founded in 1968. The idea of the founder Lilyana Todorova was to introduce a new model in the tradition of Bulgarian choral singing. Sofia Boys' Choir established itself quickly in Bulgarian choral art. Its repertoire has been especially varied after 1989, when conductor of the choir became Adriana BLAGOEVA. For some of the choir's projects Adriana Blagoeva seeks cooperation with leading performers and soloists, as is the case in the present programme: Irena PETKOVA, mezzo-soprano; Nikolay MOTSOV, tenor; Joannis KIURZOGLU, counter-tenor and Nikolay PETROV, baritone.
The programme on this release includes two popular choir works by Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (Ave Maria è Ave Verum corpus), two songs by one of Bach's sons - Johann Christian BACH (Gia la notte and Che ciascun per te sospiri), Magnificat by Simon BRIXI (a Czech composer who worked during the first half of the 18th c.), and Deutsche Messe by Michael HAYDN (Joseph Haydn's brother, who dedicated himself exclusively to church music).
