This award is the highest Bulgarian communist title. It's an extremely rare collector's piece and was instituted in analogy to the Soviet award "Hero of USSR". The small number of awarded people and the fact that many of them were foreign citizens, make this title almost impossible to come across.

Instituted: On 15th June 1948, with a decree of the Presidium of the Great Assembly.
Awarded to: Bulgarian and foreign citizens for merits in defending Bulgaria and other countries allied to Bulgaria.
Form: The badge of the title is designed in a relief-like shape of a star, with a diameter of 34 mm. On the reverse reads: "Hero of The People's Republic of Bulgaria". The "Golden Star" is to be worn on the left breast.
