Instituted: On 15th June 1948, with a decree of the Presidium of the Great National Assembly. At first, the award was named "Hero of Labor". Later, in December 1950, it was renamed to "Hero of Socialist Labor".
Awarded for: Exceptional achievements in the sphere of agriculture, science, education, culture, arts as well as for contributing to the technical progress. The people awarded with this title also received the "Golden Star" badge and "George Dimitrov" order.
Form: The badge of the title is designed in a relief shape of a star, with a diameter of 32 mm. The obverse is decorated with crossed sickle and hammer. On the reverse reads: "Hero of Socialist Labor". The star is to be worn on the left breast and is characterised by a red ribbon.
