Performed by : Julia Milanova-Steiner - soprano, Nina Aladjem - piano. Arrangements by Jules LEVY
The famous Bulgarian composer Jules Levy has adapted for voice and piano several Sephardic songs (the songs of the Jews who lived in Spain and Portugal). Banished from there in the 15th century they settled in different parts of Eastern Europe, in particular in Bulgaria. Jules Levy, a Sephardic Jew himself, has transformed skillfully the melodies, lyrical and dancing in character, into wonderful musical creations, performed for this CD by the soprano Julia Milanova-Steiner and the pianist Nina Aladjem. Milanova-Steiner 's career began in Bulgaria, at the Stefan Makedonsky State Musical Theatre and the Sofia National Opera. Her interpretations of Violetta in La Traviata and of Natasha Rostova in War and Peace were evaluated highly. In the late 80s she settled in Switzerland and there started a new period in her career during which she mostly toured as star-performer to West European opera theatres and festivals. Her singing is accompanied by Hina Aladjem, a hereditary musician and excellent pianist with great concert and pedagogical activity.
These nineteen beautiful miniatures of the set of Sephardic songs by Jules Levy are memorable because of the lovely interpretation of the two performers, and the taste and mastership with which they recreate the character and the moods, that are mostly amorous-nostalgic. This CD documents part of an original folk legacy.
