The compact disc presents Max Reger - an almost unknown author for the Bulgarian keyboard music lovers. More than 70 years ago the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg recognized him as a genius but at the same time underlined that: "Little is known about him". SchoenbergÂ’s words have remained valid for the present day, even for the fact that Reger continues to be among the lesser-known composers. Maybe it is because he worked in an epoch, when there existed a diversity of directions in the musical art, often denied or forgotten. Reger himself underwent the influence of the late Romanticism, then plunged into the depths of the Baroque polyphony and aesthetics, in the search of new ways in music.
In the present release the pianist Dimitar TSANEV, performer of a number of RegerÂ’s works, has collected examples of the two kinds: for instance Prelude and Fugue, op. 99 is perfectly constructed in a Baroque polyphonic manner, while Episodes op. 115 show the romantic outpourings of a gentle soul, thrilled and listening to its own quavers. Tsanev untwines RegerÂ’s narration with mastership and much delicacy in nuances and sound colours. His performance is profound and of exquisite style. The same is true of the Sonatina op. 84, No. 4, whose scales and structure herald the beginning of Neo-classicism in music. Tsanev draws out the musical themes in beautiful lines, underlines the uncommon approaches in the harmonic plan. Everything in his playing is organized in a very strict logical order thus resulting in a kind of music which is captivating and enjoyable. The Five Humoresques are wonderful with their capricious line and constant contrasts in the dynamics, tempos and metric rhythm, achieved with delicacy and brightness by the pianist.
