The Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1962 by a group of young musicians from the Sofia National Opera. The ensemble was quick to establish its name as an elite formation enjoying extensive concert-giving activities both at home and abroad. Between 1964 and 1978 the Soloists performed under the baton of Vassil Kazandjiev, from 1979 till 1988, under Emil Tabakov, and since 1988 they have been conducted by Plamen Djurov. The Sofia Soloists have taken part in a number of international music festivals: they have accompanied appearance of world famous musicians like Henryk Szeryng, Heinz Holliger, Daniel Shafran, Nicanor Zabaleta, Patrick Gallois, Nigel Kennedy, among others; they have recorded extensively for Victor, SABA, Harmonia Mundi, Denon, Columbia, Balkanton, Gega New, and other companies.
Plamen DJUROV (b. 1949) graduated from the State Academy of Music majoring in piano, conducting and composition. In 1984 he furthered his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music under Karl Osterreicher. Along with his work as conductor of Sofia Soloists, Mr. Djurov is also Associate Professor at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music.
