More information about the great gaida player, Dafo Trendafilov:
Dafo Manolov Trendafilov is one of the best masters of kaba (low) gaida.
Bai Dafo, as everyone calls him to express their respect, was born in the village of Guella, Smolyan district, the heart of the Rhodopes. He is 87 years old now, but gaida is still his soul mate. It has been a part of his life for more than 70 years now. When he starts playing: "people and birds become silent". Bai Dafo is the gaida player who accompanied Valya Balkannska when she performed "Izlel e Delyu Haydutin" song that flew in space in 1986.
Not only is bai Dafo an extraordinary player, but also a great master of gaida instruments.
He started crafting them in 1965. He has made at least 500-600 gaida instruments so far. Gaida has popularized bai DafoÂ’s name all over the world: in the USA, Argentina, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Europe.
And this is not all. Bay Dafo has taught at least 250 gaida players the skills and technique of masterful playing. The great musician worked as a teacher in the school of Shiroka luka for about 21 years. The rumor has it that it was due to bai DafoÂ’s popularity that the Musical school in Shiroka luka was open there and not in a bigger town, such as Smolyan. In 1969 Todor Zhivkov, the Bulgarian prime minister at the time, was in Shiroka luka. He heard bai Dafo playing gaida then and was completely enchanted by the gaida melodies. Zhivkov ordered that a musical school is to be open in Shiroka luka and bai Dafo was asked to teach there.
In 1996 Bay Dafo was invited to the Netherlands to open the biggest International Festival of Ethno Music organized by UNESCO. The prominent Bulgarian gaida player was among the VIP guests of the festival where 190 ensembles from all over the world participated.
Until last year, Bay Dafo was the honorary president of the World Federation of Gaida Players. The federation unites gaida players from Bulgaria, Scotland, France, Italy, Macedonia etc. "100 Kaba gaidas Orchestra" is also among the members of the federation.
