GD 148 BELINTASH "TOPOLOVO" Orchestra - FRENCH Performing Bulgarian Folklore Music

Issued: 2005
Style: Folklore music
Company: Gega New GD148

Not many foreigners have tackled the hard task of playing Bulgarian traditional folklore music. Not many of them have met the challenge of studying Bulgarian language and going deeper into Bulgarian culture roots. Emmanuel Frin certainly did. His enthusiasm turned out to be contagious, with a band founded in 1999 as a result. Their repertoire is entirely based on traditional Bulgarian folklore music. The orchestra follows the example of Bulgarian wedding orchestras in its instrumentation and performance style. Still, the Topolovo Orchestra sounding has its specific idiosyncrasies, combining the traditional with a creative point of view enwrapped with very interesting arrangement techniques. As professor Manol Todorov says: "Topolovo Orchestra is the meeting point of heart and mind, of the Bulgarian spirit and the new age."
Their music is full of energy and buoyancy, it is "rhythmically inspired", carrying a message abound with positivism and good spirit.
The Topolovo Orchestra makes use of all melodic devices and ornaments typical of Bulgarian folklore music: interjections, trills, vibrato, changes in timbre and metrorhythmic and dynamic contours. The guest vocal Kalinka Vulcheva also contributes to the specifically Bulgarian sounding of "Topolovo Orchestra's music.
Here are the enthusiasts who make up the first French instrumental group for Bulgarian folklore music to release a compact disc in Bulgaria:
Emmanuel Frin - Emo (clarinet, gaida, saxophone)
Jacky Molard (violin, viola, guitar)
Wenceslas Hervieux (accordion)
Jean-Francois Roger (percussion, tarambuka, djembe, and other drums)
Etienne Callac (electro-acoustic bass guitar and fretless bass guitar)
Guest vocal: Kalinka Vulcheva
