Photos: B&W drawings This publication is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the Liberation of Bulgaria . It represent the Russian-Turkish war auctions of 1878 in drawings of popular artists. The first two copies were given to the Russian president Vladimir Putin and Bulgarian president Georgi Parvanov.

Russian-Turkish war, 1878 Each people has events in its history, which can never be forgotten. For Bulgaria this is the 3rd of March – the day of Bulgaria’s Liberation. This was the day of Bulgaria’s resurrection on the European political map after a five-century long absence.
It marked the happy end of a lasting and tragic battle, which changed the destiny of the entire Balkan Peninsula. From 15/27 June, 1877, when the Russian army disembarked at Svishtov, until 19 February/3 March, 1878, when the Peace Treaty was signed in the San Stefano suburb of Constantinople, dramatic events swept the Bulgarian land and the people witnessed what they have been waiting for centuries. The crossing of the Danube, the triumphant welcoming in the last Bulgarian capital, the conquering march of General Gurko through Thrace, the epic battles around the mount of Shipka, the siege of Pleven, the winter march through the Balkan mountains, the liberation of Sofia, the last march to Constantinople, these are only episodes of the grandiose battle, which then focused the attention of the entire world.

The drawings Even though it is hard to add anything to the texts depicting the Liberation and the Russian-Turkish War, its portrayal, created in the photographs, the drawings, the graphics and engravings of military correspondents and artists has not gained sufficient popularity here in Bulgaria. Being the direct witnesses of battle events, they present us with glimpses of the real face of the war, which words are sometimes unable to grasp. Due to their works of art, the epic events, which shattered the Balkans, Europe and the world, can, even today, astonish our contemporaries with the close-up glimpses of the war, reflecting its pathetic and horrifying outbursts.
