The order was established in 1881 in honour of Alexander Batenberg. Order has two wartime grades - with swords in the middle and swords above the cross. There are following grades: Great Cross of the Order of St. Alexander, Grand and Lesser Necklace; Grand Cross, 1st class on scarf; Grand officer cross, 2nd class with star; Commander cross, 3rd class; Officer cross, 4th class; Officer cross, 5th class; Silver cross, 6th class.
