Nikola Vaptsarov unofficial medal
This is a medal that has not been identified so far, and which bears the image of Nikola Vaptsarov. It was awarded during the 1980s. Whether this medal was awarded by the municipality administration of his home town or by the local history museum, high schools or cultural activity clubs, it is hard to say.
What is known for sure is that the medal is made of yellow metal (alloy). On the obverse is Nikola VaptsarovÂ’s bust; at the periphery is written the name of this remarkable person as well as the years of his birth and death- 1909- 1942. There is no image on the reverse. The medal hangs on a blue suspender with the national tricolor on it.

Vaptsarov was born in 1909. His father was an activist in the Macedonian revolutionary movement. While still at school he became attracted to the ideas of communism and started publishing poems. During the Second World War he was an active member of the resistance. In 1942 he was arrested, tried and executed by firing squad. His only collection of poems, Motor Songs, appeared in 1940. It has been published in many editions in Bulgarian and in more than 30 other languages.
