"Romances, a refined, domestic, sympathetic, delicate type of music, especially, so-called parlor romances, occupy a special place in Russian music. Russian composers excel in this genre. It is difficult to think of a Russian composer who did not write romances. Glinka and composers of the Great Five, Balakirev, Tchaikosvdky, Rubinshtein, Musorgsky, Rakhmaninov, Davidov, Napravnik et al., all paid a tribute to this popular genre.
Gypsy music evolved over many centuries absorbing the music of those peoples through which they passed. In Russia they adapted indigenous folk songs and popular parlor romances. They freely improvised both the lyrics and melodies of these songs, imbuing them with a previously unheard emotional intensity, passion and depth, as well as the strange shifting rhythms and nuances of their own music.
Writers and composers such as Pushkin, Tolsty, Leskov and Glinka immortalized their romantic way of life. By the turn of the 20th century, Gypsy music and especially Gypsy romances had become an integral part of Russian culture.
Many of these romances became so popular and familiar in Russia that the people singing them never recollect the names of their original creators. Romances are usually performed at parties and family gathering with seven-string guitar accompaniment. In a short time, a seven-string guitar grew in popularity to such an extent that it became the favorite instrument for the accompaniment of all types of Russian romances." ( found on the Internet)
