We present you the operetta called “Bulgarians of Old Times”, which comprises Five Acts. The operetta shows the lifestyle of the Bulgarians at the end of 19 c., or in 1855, to be more precise. It is full with comic episodes, the scenes are performed with great mastership of acting.
The plot of this operetta reminds Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, although the Bulgarian love story ends happily. It is about two families who have a daughter and a son, respectively, that are old enough to get married. The daughter, Lila and the son, Pavlin, are in love with each other.
At the beginning, it seems that their parents will agree to let them get married. However, a harmless discussion results in a big quarrel. The two fathers are furious with one another and refuse to allow marriage between their children.
Nevertheless, engagement is to take place despite all. The happiness of the young couple is much too short, though. The two fathers renew their quarrel and the mess continues.
The bride is to be sent to monastery, and the bridegroom wants to kidnap her. His father agrees to help, two men are masked as women and sent to steal the young lady. At the end everyone is happy as two marriages are to take place.
This CD is full of humor, passion, joy, and all the rest of emotions one can imagine. There is an interesting small leaflet description going with the CD - with lots of picrures of the premiere's scenes as well as with information.
Mind you, the language the performers sing in is Bulgarian.
The author of the operetta is Assen Karastoyanov. He adapted the work of the popular Bulgarian writer Lyuben Karavelov, “Bulgarians of Old Times”. He is a distinguished author of classical music works and taught in the State Academy of Music.
The operetta is recorded in live during the premiere spectacle of 24 January 1959! Unique recording! ADD
