100 Years of the Heroic battle for Shipka
The medal is dedicated to one of the most important and significant battles of Bulgarian history, a part of the Russian—Turkish war (1877-1878). The Bulgarian and Russian soldiers fought side by side for Bulgaria’s liberation from the 500-year Turkish domination. The battle marks the heroism of the Bulgarian Corps of Volunteers who used all means available to fight the enemy. In the monument have been preserved the bones of participants in the fierce battles for Bulgaria’s freedom. The memorial complex was built in 1926-1934.
On the obverse of the meal is visible a man who has lifted a rock above his head. His posture reveals his intention to hurl the rock. The Bulgarian soldiers guarding Shipka pass are said to have been forced by the circumstances to use whatever they had available to fight. Before the end of the battle the soldiers fought with wooden sticks and rocks.
The lettering surrounding the image of the Bulgarian volunteers’ corps says: “100 Years of Shipka Heroic battle”.
The medal is of nice make and in good condition.
