130 Years of Captain PetkoÂ’s birth
The medal was issued in 1974 to mark 130 years of Petko VoivodeÂ’s birth (captain Petko Kiryakov Kaloyanov). This award was intended for distinguished people who achieved significant results in the sphere of culture and labor.
The diameter of the medal is 30 mm. There are two classes of the medal which are identical in terms of inscription and images. They only differ by the color of the metal (1st class is silver, second one is bronze).
On the obverse is visible Petko VoivodeÂ’s embossed image. On the reverse are inscribed the years marking the 130th anniversary of the CaptainÂ’s birth.
Petko Voyvoda (leader of the haidouck movement) is an emblematic figure who fought against the Turks while Bulgaria was under Turkish domination. He lead this fight for more than two decades and was known to be a friend of Giuseppe Garibaldi. The latter was like a teacher to the young Bulgarian and even announced him a captain.
Now, there will be put up a monument of Petko Voyvoda on Garibaldians Hill in Rome.
