On 25. January the Prince Dondoukoff - Korsakoff, Russian Imperial Commissioner to Bulgaria, approved Bulgarian National Bank Articles of Association which established that pilar of modern Bulgarian sovereignty upon which Bulgaria's economic development rests for a period of 130 years. On 4. April1879 the first BNB governor was appointed and on 23. May the Bank was officially opened. This foundation date preceded important events underlying the rebirth of Bulgarian statehood, such as the establishmentof the constituent Assembly, the drafting and approval of the Constitution, the election of the head of state and appointment of the first bulgarian government.

The silver coin was put in circulation 18. May 2009. It is the first Bulgarian coin with silica enamelled fragment from a glass - painting in the bank building. The glass painting was made by the famous Bulgarian artist Ivan Penkov in 1939to commemorate the Second Bulgarian Kingdom rulers and their coins. The stylized lion on the coin symbolizes the power, strength and independence of the Bulgarian state.
